Danny Small (Geechee Dan) NYC Street Musician

This is 71 year old, Danny Small or Geechee Dan as some New Yorkers know him.  A self taught  singer, originally from South Carolina, Danny moved to New York when he was 18 with the hopes of becoming a famous singer.  When asked about his style of music he says, “It’s singing without singing.  I never learned how to sing.”  As a child he says he just imitated the record.

In the 1980's Danny had a commitment with the Cotton Club in NYC singing 2 to 3 songs a night under the name "The Singing Dragon".  He left the Cotton Club to go on tour with a gospel band, unfortunately with no success.  In addition to the Cotton Club, Danny also performed popular venues like Baby Grand, Small's Paradise and once worked for American gangster John Gotti at his club.  In an interview said, “He was cool.  People say he’s a gangster, but I said no, he was okay, John Gotti, I used to work in his club.”

Since 2000 Danny has been performing in subway stations around NYC each day for 5 to 6 hours a day for passengers while they wait for their trains.  Thanks to his audiences, he has also become quite a YouTube star.  Danny says his goal now is to get his record label (Geechee Records) on the map and get a big company to pick him up.  Then he wants to put out a clothing line.  He says, “They got Gucci...I come out with Geechee.”

Danny’s repertoire and influences include music by the Beatles, Elvis Presley, Chubby Checker, Van Morison, Smokey Robinson,  and Al Greene to name a few.

Contrary to popular belief, Danny is not homeless and lives with his son in Harlem.

The Titanic Orchestra

100 years ago on April 15, 2012, musicians, Wallance Hartley (Bandmaster, Violin), Roger M. Bricoux (Cello),Theodore R. Brailey (Piano), John W. Woodward (Cello), John F. P. Clarke (String Bass, Viola), John L. Hume (Violin), Percy C. Taylor (Piano) and Georges A Krins (Violin) made the ultimate sacrifice aboard the RMS Titanic, playing until the very end in an attempt to keep the passengers calm.
Contrary to popular belief, the Titanic Orchestra was not part of the Titanic’s crew.  They were employed by C.W. and F.N. Black who paid around 4 pounds a month with no uniform allowance. Although the Captain of the Titanic could have suggested they keep playing while the ship went down, but would not have been able to order them to.  They all however played on until they couldn't play anymore.  Their final song was "Nearer my God to Thee."

"So as the band played on with death in sight.  In some small way they gave the final death rites." -Ode to the Titanic, Written by Lady Kathleen
On April 30, 1912, John Hume’s father received a bill from C.W. and F.N. Black for the uniform John was wearing on the Titanic.  14 shillings and 7 pence.

What's in a stand?

If you're a musician or DJ like me who has to lug all your equipment around from gig to gig, you know how much of a toll that takes on your back.  There have been times where I have set everything up and had no energy left to play the show.

Well, things are getting better, for speaker stands at least.  Check out the Stageline SSB1S Speaker Stand.  It's lightweight and compact when folded and is ready to work when set up.  It has a base that spans 27" for extra support, and can adjust from a hight of 42 1/2" to 77".  The best part is they weigh less then 7 pounds!  Now don't be fooled by that, this stand packs some muscle with a load capacity of 110 pounds.
I started using these stands last year and have come to love them.  They can take a beating in the truck or van and are still ready to work whenever you need them.

Check out the Stageline Speaker Stand at the ShowTimeShop.com and you can have your own for just $63.99!
